Political Science

Degree Roadmaps

All three Road Maps are for Junior Transfer Students. Students who begin in their freshman year are advised to take POSC 1201 and 1202 during their freshman and sophomore years. Students who are working full time are advised to attend Cal State part time and stretch the requirements over three or more upper-division years.

Road Map for Traditional Political Science Major (56 units)

Fall of junior year

  • POSC 1201 (if not completed in community college) – offered all 4 quarters

Fall or Winter of junior year

  • POSC 3030 (Study of Political Science)

Winter of junior year

  • POSC 1202 (if not completed in community college) – offered all 4 quarters

Some time during Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer of junior year

  • One course in each of the following categories
    1. American Government and Public Administration (includes courses listed under Public Policy and Administration)
    2. Public Law
    3. Comparative Government and Politics
    4. International Relations
    5. Political Theory

Some time in the junior or senior year

  • 12-20 additional units of political science courses (of which up to 8 units may be lower division courses)

Some time in the senior year

  • 3 upper division G.E. courses

Winter or Spring of senior year

  • POSC 4910, Political Science Seminar

Some time in the 4 years

  • Enough electives (along with the units in the major and the G.E. program) to reach 180 units

Road Map for Political Science Major, Public Affairs and Administration Option (61 units)

Fall of junior year

  • POSC 1201 (if not completed in community college) – offered all 4 quarters

Some time in Fall, Winter or Spring of junior year

  • ECON 2301
  • ECON 2302 or POSC 1202
  • Accounting 2251
  • Statistics 1000 or 2010

Fall or Winter of junior year

  • POSC 3030 (Study of Political Science)

Some time during the senior year

  • 28 units of upper division courses from Groups I, II and III
  • 4-unit Service Requirement (POSC 3113, 3898 or another service course approved by the department chair)

Winter or Spring of senior year

  • POSC 4910, Political Science Seminar

Some time in the senior year

  • 3 upper division G.E. courses

Some time in the 4 years

  • Enough electives (along with the units in the major and the G.E. program) to reach 180 units

Fall of junior year

  • POSC 1201 (if not completed in community college) – offered all 4 quarters

Fall or Winter of junior year

  • POSC 3030 (Study of Political Science)

Winter of junior year

  • POSC 1202 (if not completed in community college) – offered all 4 quarters

Some time in junior or senior year

  • One lower or upper division POSC course in International Relations
  • One lower or upper division POSC course in Comparative Government
  • One upper division POSC course in Political Theory
  • 16 units of courses under the heading “The Political and Policy Context of the Law”
  • 20 units of courses under the heading “Public Law”
  • Enough electives to reach 180 units
