Scholarships, Prizes, and Departmental Recognition of Outstanding Achievement
A number of scholarships and awards are available for majors in History at Cal State East Bay. We very much encourage students to apply. For any questions about these scholarships, call the Department Office at 510-885-3207. The Department can also provide you with information about scholarships for history students administered by organizations outside the University.
Evelyn Whitman Rice Scholarship for Graduating Seniors
The Rice Memorial Scholarship for Graduating Seniors is restricted to upper division majors in the History. The award recognizes past accomplishments and promise of future achievement. One scholarship is awarded annually on the recommendation of the Department of History. Applications are invited from students who have a 3.25 overall G.P.A. and a 3.50 G.P.A. in history. Interested students should turn in an application (available at the History Department Office), three letters of recommendation (including at least two from former or current instructors), copies of transcripts verifying grade point averages; and an essay of approximately 300 words demonstrating your interest in the field of history.
Evelyn Whitman Rice Memorial Scholarship for First-Time Freshmen
The Rice Memorial Scholarship for Community College Transfer Students is restricted to students transferring to CSUEB as History majors. The same requirements and application procedures apply as for the Rice Memorial Scholarship for Graduating Seniors. This award depends on availablity of funds.
Sandoval Scholarship
The Sandoval Memorial Scholarship is awarded each year to a History Major who demonstrates past accomplishments and the promise of future achievement. Applications are invited from students who have a 3.00 overall G.P.A. and a 3.25 G.P.A. in history in their first two quarters at Cal State East Bay. Interested students should turn in an application (available at the History Department Office), three letters of recommendation (including at least two from former or current instructors), and copies of transcripts verifying grade point averages.
F. Dan Gilliard Scholarship for Outstanding Papers in History 4030
Each year, the Department of History awards prizes for the best papers written in HIST 4030 (Historiography) course sections. Department faculty nominate candidates for these awards every spring. Finalists are chosen by the History Scholarship Committee.

Each year, the Department of History awards prizes for the best papers written in HIST 4031 (Historical Research Methods) course sections. Department faculty nominate candidates for these awards every spring. Finalists are chosen by the History Scholarship Committee.
Evelyn Whitman Rice Memorial Fund for M.A. Students in History
History graduate students completing their M.A. projects are eligible for small awards to subsidize travel to collections, photocopying and microfilming, purchase of software, and other research-related expenses. Awards depend on available funds and the relative merit of students' applications. Invitations to apply are sent out each May 15, with grants awarded after July 1.
