ON RELATIONSHIPS

Dr. Soledad Rica LlorenteThe latest articles on the Journal are all about relationships. People are social creatures, living in a concentric circle of relationships. The circle generally consists of our relationship with our own selves, followed by our immediate family, then relatives, friends, our community, the general society and the environment. In fact, the global view is that we are a family of nations. Life becomes meaningful and, conversely, loses meaning, because of our relationships.

Three talented writers share a glimpse of their relationships. Dr. Ricardo Singson, having recently retired as professor emeritus, reflects on his view of Filipino-British relations stemming from his own interracial marriage. A mother and daughter tandem holds a conversation in exquisite writing revealing their hearts and love for one another. Author and columnist Gemma Nemenzo provides an excerpt from her book “Heart in Two Places” with an essay plumbing the reasons for immigrating with her children to the United States. Providing the foreword to the book, her daughter Aurora Angela Almendral, brings us along on her journey discovering her mother and their relationship.

Reading their stories may enrich your relationships, even as they did mine.
