TECHNOLOGY AND RESEARCH
FOCUS ON FILIPINO STORIES

Dr. Soledad Rica LlorenteCompelling stories of six Filipinos from the San Francisco Bay Area were the focus of a recent symposium at California State University East Bay (CSUEB).  The event was not an ordinary forum because it demonstrated the use of cutting edge technology in social science research.  Using micro documentaries as the method for gathering oral history, the project aimed to foster greater understanding among different generations of Filipinos in the area with stories of memories of past lives, struggles at present, and dreams for the future.

Micro docs, as they are known, are being adopted in mainstream research.  These are video tapes with a maximum time of four minutes each, projecting succinct testimonies in sight and sound.  The event drew around 150 attendees, mostly students, and members of the Filipino American community.  It was a learning and collaborative experience.   The event was organized by the Center for Filipino Studies, funded by the California Council for the Humanities, supported by CSUEB, with strong participation by the Pilipino American Student Association.

The websites of the Center for Filipino Studies and its electronic Journal of Filipino Studies are proud to feature these micro documentaries as well as the other presentations in PowerPoint and still pictures.
