I always ask students to try to find a marker with
either (or both) their first or last name. Some students
search in vain, others know right where to go. Steve, in
this photo, is next to his grandfather's marker. Needless
to say, this is not his mom's favorite picture!

This photo doesn't represent anything students were
supposed to look for, but was appealing to my student for
the combination of stark tree branches, fresh green
clover, and very old headstone.

This is just a nice shot of a typical Bay Area
cemetery, memorial park style.

On my main Death & Dying page, in the section on Obituaries and Epitaphs, there's
a little icon of a headstone with "I told you I was
sick!" as its epitaph. Having seen that, the student
who came across the headstone shown in the photo here was
quite startled, and it took her a minute to realize that
"IMSICK" is a last name, not a strange sort of
commentary.

Here's a creepy sight. The vault is old and cracked,
the door is boarded up, and the stencilled sign on it
says "Condemned, see Office."

Here's an example of what one might call religious grafitti: "1 John 4:7."

And from the Pet Cemetery, this inscription:
She asked for so little
but gave so much
Rest in peace
my little pumkin.
I'll love you
forever and a day.
