A Bird’s Eye View From the Crow’s Nest

Slews of waterside restaurants with breathtaking views and specialty seafood dishes line the beaches of the Bay Area. Some are small hole-in-the-walls; others extravagant and pricey establishments. But to find a romantic, yet fun and friendly beach-side restaurant, I ventured a bit south of the Bay Area and into Santa Cruz.
The Crow’s Nest has not only a stunning view of the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary, but it also boasts award-winning food, a full bar, outdoor seating, private rooms, and music. Seafood, Midwestern beef, and pastas are served daily along with a chef’s special like Monday’s herb-crusted filet mignon or Tuesday’s lobster tail.
When I entered, the first thing I noticed were the wood tables and the subtle lighting, which gave of a friendly ambiance. The hostess welcomed me right away and walked me to the top floor where the Breakwater Bar and Grill is located, to a table by the window, where I could see the beaches, the wharf and the lighthouse.
The smoked salmon and vinaigrette salad per my waitress’ recommendation, along with an order of calamari were delicious, and both came special sauces that greatly enhanced the meal.
But food is not the only aspect of the Crow’s Nest that has locals and visitors coming back routinely. It also has two full bars, and an extensive wine selection.
The subtle lighting, rich woods and the gleaming glass decoration that goes through both levels of the restaurant are pleasing to the eye and create a comfortable atmosphere. The exclusive collection of vintage surfboards and local surfing photos add to the restaurant’s atmosphere.
Concerts are a common sight at the Crow’s Nest, and the night I frequented the restaurant, Kazak, a rock band from Texas was playing as I ate my dinner.
The restaurant is broken into two levels and separate areas, but the Pacific Ocean can be viewed from any seat in the house.
The main dining room on the first floor is for meals and the second floor is for guests ordering appetizers and drinks.
The Crow’s Nest is one of the most pleasant and entertaining restaurants in northern California, where you can enjoy a pleasant ambience, a one-of-a-kind view, and quality California cuisine.
