- Center for Communicative Disorders
- Early Childhood Education Center
(ECEC) Program
The Early Childhood Education Center (ECEC) is an on-campus
preschool that serves children from ages 4 months to 5 years
of age. It is child-centered, and strives to create an environment
in which every child and parent feels valued. Parents are urged
to participate in the school's activiities as much as possible.
It is an ideal environment for children with communication difficulties,
because of the supportive nature
of the school. Language disordered children are immersed in the
same daily routines as the other children, and learn from them
with the teachers' guidance. The speech-language clinic builds
upon this framework, providing therapy that enhances the language
of the classroom routines for the benefit of the language disordered
child, rather than removing the child from the benefits of exposure
to the daily routine and the other children who are paticipating
in them. Student interns learn how to follow classroom routines
in their administration of speech-language treatment, how to
deliver treatment within the classroom, and how to work with
teachers, teachers' aides, and partents within the classroom.
