Although chicken had been important in China since ancient times, especially for religious reasons, during the nineteenth century it was not an everyday source of protein. In contrast, at Yema-po the use of chicken meat was significant; a minimum of 55 chickens (424 fragments, 368.2 grams) were discovered in the Yema-po excavations.
