This is the Spanish name for the people who inhabit the island of Cebu, the first visited by Magellan. Once the largest ethnic group in the Philippines, the Cebuano now take second place to the Tagalog. They control commerce south of Luzon, and wield such influence that the Cebuano language is the lingua franca in the south. The Cebuano are thoroughly westernized, and have a major metropolis at Cebu City.
