From their language it is evident that the Abaknon are more closely related to the seagoing Sama of the Sulu than the Bikolano and Waray peoples who surround them. However, they are highly acculturated, and have adapted the lifeways of their neighbors to a great extent. Some of the people apparently live on Samar.
