Botija Olive Jar
Several earthenware jars bearing an unmistakable resemblance to Greek and Roman
amphora were found in the Muni Metro excavation. Olive jars were common aboard ships
of the 17th, 18th, and 19th century. The jars’ primary use was to transport and store
goods, particularly liquids such as water, oils, and ointments.
The jar shown here, as well as several other large fragments, were found near the
deck of the Rome and may have been used in the ship’s water supply.
