Required Texts:
1. Richard Lee, The Dobe !Kung.
2. Reader (available for two-hour reserve in the library under the course title, and through lecturer at a cost of about $10.00)
3. An Indian Village through Letters and Pictures, by Detlef Kantowsky, published by Oxford University Press, 1995.
4. Recommended: James Peacock, The Anthropological Lens.
Reading Assignments: It is expected that the reading assignments for a given week will be completed by the first meeting of that week. There may be additional reading assignments of mimeographed handouts during the quarter. These will be distributed the week before the material is discussed in class.
Films: There are many films to be presented in this class. They are an essential part of the course. Students are responsible for all material presented in the films. If you miss a class during which a film was presented, contact the Instructional Media Center immediately for an individual showing. The mid-term and final exams will be built around materials from the films.
Exams: Mid-term and final. The final will cover primarily, but not exclusively, material from the second half of the course. Both exams will be take-home essay exams.
Grading Policy: The course grade will be calculated as follows-
Mid-term 50%
Final 50%
Attendance: Although attendance is not a requirement of the course, obviously students who do not attend regularly are at a severe disadvantage in terms of viewing films, changes in assignments, information on tests, practice and familiarity with the ideas and material of the course. Many of the films are rental films and must be returned soon after they are shown in class. Neither the instructor nor the Instructional Media Center can guarantee the availability of films for viewing other than at the time they are shown in class.
Changes: Changes in the syllabus, schedule of exams, homework assignments, nature of exams will be announced in class at least once, the week before. All students are responsible for acquiring such information on their own should they miss class.
